US deports ‘uniquely barbaric’ migrants to Africa
“We are removing these convicted criminals from our soil to ensure they can never harm another American victim,” DHS wrote on X.
This deportation follows a similar removal operation last week, in which eight individuals labeled as “barbaric criminal illegal aliens” were sent to South Sudan. Those deported included nationals from South Sudan, Cuba, Laos, Mexico, Myanmar, and Vietnam, all convicted of serious crimes such as murder, sexual assault, and robbery. Most had either completed their prison terms or were nearing release.
The latest flight to Eswatini carried five men from Vietnam, Jamaica, Laos, Cuba, and Yemen, convicted of offenses ranging from child rape to murder, according to DHS spokeswoman Tricia McLaughlin.
Since his return to office in January, President Donald Trump has reinstated strict immigration policies. In February, Homeland Security expanded fast-track deportations to third countries, triggering a class-action lawsuit from immigrant rights advocates who argued the removals deny migrants due process.
Last month, the US Supreme Court overturned an injunction by a Massachusetts judge, who had ruled that deporting individuals to countries other than their own without proper legal procedures “unquestionably” breached constitutional rights.
Todd Lyons, acting director of US Immigration and Customs Enforcement, said in a recent memo that migrants may now be deported to third countries with as little as six hours’ notice, even if there are no guarantees they won’t face persecution or torture upon arrival.
