Hurricane Melissa Strikes Southwestern Jamaica
(MENAFN) Hurricane Melissa made landfall on Tuesday in the southwestern region of Jamaica, near New Hope, around 1 pm ET (1700 GMT).
The storm brought estimated maximum sustained winds of 185 mph (295 kph), making it an exceptionally dangerous weather event.
Authorities have classified the situation as extremely perilous, posing a severe risk to human life. The Category 5 hurricane has been identified as the most powerful ever to threaten Jamaica, prompting urgent safety measures.
Residents are strongly urged to remain inside their homes.
Jamaica’s military and fire departments are preparing to conduct search and rescue missions once Melissa moves past the island.
Desmond McKenzie, deputy chairman of the Disaster Risk Management Council, emphasized that the teams are ready for immediate deployment.
"We have equipment that are pre-positioned. Once the request comes in, the team will be ready to go. We have boats, helicopters … you name it," McKenzie told reporters, as reported by a news agency in the US.
