Hispanic Heritage Month Kicks Off at CSN

September 17 2026

The Henderson campus was filled with music, food and plenty of energy Tuesday as nearly 150 students, faculty, staff and community members came together to kick off Hispanic Heritage Month at CSN.

Hosted by the Office of Civic and Cultural Engagement, the Sept. 15 celebration transformed the Henderson Student Union into an afternoon of culture and community. Guests sampled Latin American favorites, enjoyed live performances, tried their hand at arts and crafts and connected with CSN and community organizations.

And there was plenty to eat. The menu included beef and chicken taquitos, cheese arepas, Colombian empanadas, Cuban-style beef macha, yuca, chips and salsa, along with aguas frescas including horchata, Jamaica and lemon cucumber.

Throughout the afternoon, attendees enjoyed performances by mariachi and Ballet Folklórico, while speakers included CSN Chief of Staff Dr. Yvonne Realivasquez and student leader Ricardo Madrid.

A group of people, including performers in colorful traditional attire, pose together in a brightly lit room decorated with festive papel picado banners and balloons.

Students also had a chance to meet representatives from CSN groups including the Latino Student Alliance, Generation Dreamers, First Gen Club, ASCSN and the CSN Libraries. Community organizations joined the celebration as well, giving attendees another opportunity to learn about resources available beyond campus.

The Henderson event is part of a larger effort to bring cultural celebrations directly to students across CSN. The Office of Civic and Cultural Engagement rotates heritage month celebrations among CSN’s three main campuses, helping ensure students across the college have opportunities to experience and celebrate different cultures and traditions.

Judging by the turnout in Henderson, students were more than ready to celebrate.

With nearly 150 people filling the Student Union, the kickoff brought together food, music, art and community for an afternoon that felt exactly like a celebration should.

And Hispanic Heritage Month at CSN is just getting started.
